KUALA LUMPUR, April 1 — Single mother Norizan Salleh, who was shot five times by police last Oct 30, will sue the police but today brought her case to Parliament and demanded answers from the government.
“I want to know why I was shot “ said Norizan, who was accompanied by lawmakers from Pakatan Rakyat (PR).
On that night, the 29-year-old was travelling on the Middle Ring Road 2 with three others when police open fire on the car from behind, allegedly without justification.
Her lawyer N. Surendran said they decided to come to Parliament to meet Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein after being turned away from his office in Putrajaya on Feb 25.
Hishammuddin later met Norizan, her lawyer and Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin at his office in Parliament for 10 minutes.
According to an aide, the minister had told them that he would look into the case and listen to all sides.
Besides demanding an independent inquiry to be set up, Surendran also announced that Norizan would also be suing the police.
“Yes, she wants compensation but the culprits must be brought to justice.”
Surendran had earlier also lashed out at the Minister for his written reply in Parliament that no action would be taken against the police.
He also had stated the group was travelling in a stolen car and had tried to ram a police road block.
However Surendran said Norizan was an innocent passenger in the car and denied there was any road block.
“I can prove the police are lying because there were bullet holes on the back of the car which indicates the shot were not fired from the front.”
He points out that the police in the case has acted beyond local laws and international norms where shots are usually fire in self-defence.
According to him Norizan had no previous criminal record and none in the car were armed.
Surendran today also disclosed that he had met another of the victims in the car but who is to afraid to come forward.
He alleged the victims were brought to a police station and coerced into making confessions that they were involved in crime.
During the incident Norizan right wrist bone was shattered by two bullets while two other bullets grazed her arm and torso. The last bullet hit her in the middle of her chest, narrowly missing her heart.
She also alleged that she was pull out of the car and was kicked and stepped on by the police.
Norizan also recounted how she had to beg for mercy before she was brought to hospital.
She was returning to her home in Gombak after having drinks with her friends when the incident happened.
The mother of an 11-year-old also said her hospital bills so far amounted to RM18,000 and she remains unemployed.
